PDF’s are the document type of choice for a large share of legal firms as they provide added security features, editing and copyright controls over standard Word documents.

Finally, Winscribe’s Workflow Designer, the main interface where users can model, design and automate business processes in Winscribe BPM, has undergone a major overhaul. It now features improved designer controls (“shortcuts”) that make designing a BPM workflow quicker and easier, as well as new input methods and layout options for creating workflows. What Is Business Process Modeling?

Business process modeling is an essential component of the broader field of business process management. In order to deliver a high-quality product or service in an efficient manner, work must be broken down into a number of specific functions. Business process modeling seeks to optimize these functions in order to achieve organizational efficiency and maintain a consistently high level of quality.

A Brief History of Business Process Modeling

The need for formal business processes first became evident in the late 1700s, when Adam Smith argued in favor of the division of labor in his 1776 work, The Wealth of Nations. In the early 1900s, business theorists such as Frank and Lillian Gilbreth and Frederick Winslow Taylor analyzed and documented work processes, proposing new ways to increase productivity and efficiency. Their theories were embraced by business owners, but often met with resistance from workers – especially when assembly lines resulted in mass unemployment during the Great Depression of the 1930s.

The term "business process modeling" first emerged in the 1960s; it appeared in an Automation article titled "Business Process Modeling Improves Administrative Control," which was published by S. Williams in December 1967. Research and development of business automation processes flourished in the 1960s and 1970s, when tools such as data flow charts and theories like Total Quality Management (TQM) became more widely accepted. Certain aspects of TQM – including Lean and Six Sigma – have become key components of modern business process management.

During the early 1990s, Michael Hammer and James Champey championed the concept of business process re-engineering (BPR) in their 1993 book, Re-engineering the Corporation: A Manifesto for Business Revolution. However, much like the business theories from the early 1900s, this approach faced criticism for being too mechanistic and focusing on actions instead of people. BPR soon became synonymous with downsizing and layoffs, and eventually fell out of favor. However, the best practices of BPR have been incorporated into today’s business process modeling. When used correctly, business process modeling can greatly enhance an organization's workflow efficiency – with full support from employees.

Business Process Modeling Objectives and Steps

The twin goals of business process modeling are to improve organizational efficiency and product quality. In practice, business process modeling uses workflow diagrams to display various work processes and functions. This visual representation helps executives and managers understand and analyze processes.

Each function or department within an organization has its own responsibilities; for example, the sales team is charged with finding and keeping customers, while supply chain managers must ensure there is sufficient inventory to fulfill orders and meet demand. To ensure that everyone is aware of their individual responsibilities and carries them out in a timely and consistent manner, organizations rely on business process modeling as part of a broader business process management system.

Creating a business process model starts with defining what each process is seeking to accomplish and how it interrelates with other processes within the organization. Professionals involved in business process modeling must first identify:

· How a process contributes to an organization’s goals

· All the steps involved in a process

· The sequence in which these steps should be executed

· What skills are needed to carry out the steps

· What the decision-making process entails

· Which staff members have authority to make decisions

· Who approves the final decisions

· The roles and responsibilities of all contributors

· How internal and external customers communicate with those involved in the process

· What documentation should be produced and maintained in relation to the process

· The implications of each process, both within and outside of the organization

It’s clear that professionals must take many factors into consideration when conducting business process modeling. That’s why formal training is so important for anyone seeking to transition into or advance within the field of business process management.

Hitachi Consulting UK Enables Innovation Group to Transform Global Claims Administrators’ Business

Consolidation of Multiple Back-Office Financial Applications onto a Single Microsoft Platform Transforms the Company’s Worldwide Claims Business

LONDON — 28 June2010 —[@PR2WEB ] - Hitachi Consulting UK today announced that it is helping the Innovation Group to transform its global claims administrators’ business by consolidating legacy financial systems into a new corporate ledger application.The new application will run on a Microsoft Dynamics® AX platform and integrate with Innovation Group’s latest insurance software, ‘Insurer’.

Innovation Group operates within a number of regions globally including theUK, Spain, France, Germany, Australia, South Africa and the US. The company handles incidents and claims for more than 800 insurance and finance service customers per year. As a result of substantial growth through acquisition, the company was operating ten disparate financial back-office systems. Innovation Group recognised that operating from multiple financial management systems was causing the business a number of challenges, including the manual tasks of month end processes within each region and the consolidation of global accounts.

Tom Mann, Global Enterprise Programme Manager, Innovation Group, commented, “The manual intervention required to invoice, bill and collect was excessive and inefficient, and was having repercussions across the group.”

Following a comprehensive selection process, Innovation Group chose Microsoft Dynamics AX as its platform and awarded the implementation project to Hitachi Consulting UK. One of the deciding factors for Innovation Group was Hitachi Consulting UK’s Dynamics AX Delivery methodology,known as ’Consensus‘, which includes a toolset and accelerators to help reduce risk, delivery times and cost, and facilitate best practice configuration.

They were extremely flexible and happy to work to our project management methodology, providing reports and updates whenever we required them.They also flagged issues and risks immediately and gave us complete confidence in their ability to deliver on time and budget. Hitachi Consulting completed the first implementation successfully on time and on budget. Hitachi Consulting’s consultants completed an initial inception phase. This involved workshops with key stakeholders to validate the assumptions made regarding the adoption of Hitachi Consulting’s best practice processes, the use of standard Dynamics AX without any customisations, as well as to understand and scope the integration with Insurer. Hitachi Consulting’s library of nearly 1,000 best practice business processes, matching configurations and test scripts help to drive down the long-term cost of ownership and improve the overall supportability of the platform. The project also made use of Hitachi Consulting’s offshore development team in Pune, India, whose staff provided excellent support to ensure the project was delivered on time and within budget.

The business benefits that are expected to be realised from the roll-out of the Microsoft Dynamics solution include:
• Operational savings across finance teams as a result of business process automation
•Significantly reduced licence and upgrade costs
• Improved visibility and management of operational finances and cash flow – the company is now in a better position to improve age debtors and control costs

The first phase of the project was delivered in December 2009. This involved supporting Innovation Group with the first roll-out of its new finance platform to its business in France.It also involved delivering training and support materials to enable Innovation Group to complete the roll-out across Spain, UK, Germany, Australia, South Africa and the US in2010.

Hitachi Consulting UK Wins Met Office Contract

Combined Customer Relationship Management, Sales, Enquiry and Actionable Service Catalogue Solution, Built on Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 as a Platform, to Support Unique Business Processes and Services

LONDON – 24 May 2010 – [@PR2WEB] - Hitachi Consulting UK today announced that it has won a contract and commenced work with the Met Office. This undertaking supports the Met Office’s current programme of change to rationalise and improve the cataloguing of products and services offered to Met Office’s customers.

Hitachi Consulting UK will oversee and implement a solution built on the Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 platform, resulting in an overall centralised system the aim of which is to improve business processes. Once completed, the solution will be utilised by people across the Met Office in an effort to offer customers better service and support the management and the sale of weather-related services and consultancy.

The Met Office is the United Kingdom's national weather service, and is one of the leading and most highly respected global meteorological weather service providers.

The Met Office is currently undergoing a programme of change to rationalise and improve the cataloguing of products and services offered to customers. To support this process, the Met Office required a technical solution which would help move information from the existing Word templates into a searchable and actionable service catalogue. At the same time, the Met Office identified an opportunity to support sales and enquiry processes in the new centralised solution by replacing the existing application. This new solution provides them the flexibility and functionality to track customer calls and queries, maintain visibility in the process and convert the calls/queries to sales opportunities as appropriate.

“We knew we needed to engage with an external team and after conducting a competitive tender process we believe Hitachi Consulting UK was the right fit for us,” said Claire Ross, Senior Project Manager at the Met Office.

The solution also needed to provide integration to a variety of back office and other systems, including financial, asset management and content management. Hitachi Consulting UK will be implementing Scribe Insight to accelerate this integration, making use of the Dynamics CRM database and Web services adapters to provide the required interfaces.

The project will include design, build, migration, training and transition to Hitachi Consulting Managed Services, providing support for an initial period of three years.

April 28 2010 -- Nürnberg [@PR2WEB ] - For creating their pharmaceutical product information and packaging, Weleda AG Schwäbisch Gmünd has been using SCHEMA's XML editing and content management system. The associated tasks are done with SCHEMA ST4, from creating the texts to generating the layout in Adobe InDesign. Processes, especially release processes, are controlled by the system. Role-based permissions ensure that tasks are assigned to the respective team. In addition, SCHEMA ST4 serves as a central repository, storing all packaging texts, images, barcodes and layouts for drug information.

Weleda is one of the leading manufacturers of medicinal products for complementary medicine and products for holistic body care. When creating their pharmaceutical product information, the company pays the utmost attention to legal requirements such as those specified by German pharmaceutical law and EU policies.

SCHEMA ST4 now makes possible the comprehensive representation of processes for and changes to packaging and allows companies to document the necessary tracking and release steps in a legally secure manner and to store in a central database all pharmaceutical and packaging information. The entire process for creating pharmaceutical product information is initiated and controlled in SCHEMA ST4, starting with text creation, via editing and release of the content, to creating the layout for the packaging, and checking and releasing the master copies for printing.

The templates and master copies for the packaging materials for various delivery forms, dosages and product sizes of medicinal products are created with the layout program Adobe InDesign® and controlled in SCHEMA ST4. In addition, SCHEMA ST4 controls the "filling" of the master copies with content and text. Thus errors can be avoided and manual text entry omitted. Released master copies for labels in packaging can now be printed online directly from the system.

Hitachi Consulting UK Enables Luton Borough Council to Improve Efficiency

Portal Provides Single Point of Access on Key Performance Indicators for Council and Its Partners

LONDON — 22 March 2010 — [@PR2WEB] - Hitachi Consulting UK today announced the deployment of a Performance Management Portal for Luton Borough Council (LBC) based on Microsoft’s Business Intelligence platform. The key objective was to help Luton Borough Council monitor and manage its performance by making it easier for LBC staff and partners, including local Primary Care Trust (PCT) and Police to collate and share the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) easily.

Out of 198 national indicators – as defined by the Audit Commission – up to 35 are chosen by each council to be achieved by 2011 and these form part of their Local Area Agreement (LAA). However, a recent report by the Audit Commission found that councils are sometimes basing important decisions on unreliable information.

LBC was heavily reliant on manual processes – reporting systems were labour intensive and access to information by relevant stakeholders and partner organisations, such as the Police and PCT, was not straightforward or readily available.

Hitachi Consulting UK provided business consulting, analysis and development services to assist LBC in the following areas:

- Define the business requirements for a Performance Management solution and
develop a roadmap, business case and strategy for the deployment of the solution

- Verify the use of the Microsoft Business Intelligence (BI) platform to support the
Performance Management strategy and business requirements

- Initiate Phase 1 of the Performance Management Portal solution including the design, development and deployment of the solution to the LBC performance management corporate reporting team, departmental performance officers and LBC partners; Police and PCT

- Install and configure the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 environment to support the Performance Management Portal solution and other strategic portal applications

- Plan Phases 2 and 3 of the Performance Management Portal scheduled for 2010

Hitachi Consulting UK implemented a Performance Management solution using the Microsoft Business Intelligence platform to support LBC performance management requirements today and in the future. It provides a joined-up and common framework to be used across all LBC’s 18 service areas, as well as external partner organisations, via a Web-based portal, to access and input data. Not only does the system reduce the need for manual processes, increase day to day business and process efficiency associated with data collation from telephone calls, emails and Excel spreadsheets, and improve reporting capabilities, the Performance Management solution is a way in which LBC can realise the benefits and value of its Microsoft deployments since signing up to a 3-year Microsoft Enterprise Agreement in July 2008.

The council has also used the technologies purchased in the Microsoft Enterprise Agreement, which has seen a saving of some £2.8 m over a 3-year period to implement this system. For the Portal, it is expected that further benefits will be seen, once this system is then utilised across the council, as the corporate system for the production and sharing of any information related to the performance of services across the Council.
